Elena Popova was born in 1961 in Sofia, Bulgaria. In 1987 she graduated with a MFA in painting from the Academy of Fine Arts in Sofia. In 1990 she moved to Canada with her family. She has exhibited locally, nationally and internationally at numerous public and private galleries.
Elena has shown her work in more than 50 solo and group exhibitions in places like The Rooms, St. John's, Canada; Beaverbrook Gallery, Fredericton, Canada; Salt Lake City, USA; Toronto, Canada; Paris, France; Saskatoon, Canada; Sofia, Bulgaria; Orvieto and Noto, Italy. Popova's works, among others, are in the public collections of: Syracuse University Art Galleries, Syracuse, USA; University of Toronto, Canada; University of Texas at Austin, USA; Bibliotheque Nationale de France; The National Gallery, Sofia, Bulgaria; The Rooms Provincial Art Gallery, Canada; Scotiabank, Canada, ESSO, Canada; Department of Canadian Heritage, Canada and in hundreds of private collections in North America, South America, Australia, Asia and Europe.
Elena Popova has been awarded more than 20 artistic creation grants by regional, national and international granting agencies. She was awarded scholarships for national and international residencies and her works have been published in more than 30 publications in Canada, the United States and Italy. Elena and her husband Luben Boykov are the subject of a feature-length documentary "Luben and Elena", produced by the National Film Board of Canada.
